  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup warm whole milk
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup softened unsalted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp red food coloring
  • For Filling: 1/2 cup softened unsalted butter, 1 cup packed brown sugar, 2 tbsp ground cinnamon, 1/2 tsp salt
  • For Frosting: 8 oz softened cream cheese, 1/4 cup softened unsalted butter, 1.5 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix warm milk and water; add yeast and let foam. In another bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt. Gradually mix in wet ingredients along with eggs and butter. Knead until smooth.
  2. Place dough in a greased bowl; cover and let rise until doubled (about an hour).
  3. Mix filling ingredients in a bowl while waiting for the dough.
  4. Roll out risen dough into a rectangle; spread filling evenly.
  5. Roll up tightly and slice into equal pieces (about 12). Arrange in a greased baking dish.
  6. Let rolls rise again for about 30 minutes; preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for approximately 25 minutes until golden.
  7. Prepare frosting by mixing cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla until smooth. Frost warm rolls.
